Discover a distinctive Korean cooking experience in Busan at Baeromodi, as highlighted by the Busan Tourism Organization in 2025,
Baeromodi is a hands-on Korean cooking class inspired by the identity of Busan as a historic port city. “Bae” (meaning “boat”) symbolizes Busan’s port, a gateway through which diverse cultures have long been connected, while “Modi” means “gather” in the local Gyeongsang dialect. Reflecting this heritage, Baeromodi serves as a welcoming space where people from around the world come together to share food, stories, and culture through cooking together.
Each class begins with a curated selection of handmade traditional Korean desserts and tea that invite visitors to get ready for its unique 3-hour cooking session. Their hands-on cooking session makes a variety of Korean dishes, from the classic K-foods, such as gimbap, tteokbokki, bibimbap, bulgogi, and japchae, to more special Busan-inspired seafood dishes, including seafood pajeon, jeonbokjuk (abalone porridge), and seafood seaweed soup. All dishes are made and tailored by seasonal ingredients of the time.
Participants also explore traditional Korean fermented sauces—doenjang (soybean paste), ganjang (soy sauce), and gochujang (chili paste)—and incorporate them into their dishes, obtaining a deeper understanding of Korean flavors and culinary heritage.
Throughout the class, the whole experience of cooking and learning is centered on the philosophy of Korean food. Baeromodi offers insight into the harmony and aesthetics in Korean cuisine, including the concept of obangsaek (the five traditional colors), along with the cultural values and meanings behind the ingredients, techniques, and dishes.
All classes are conducted in English and held in small groups to ensure a personalized experience. Led by a certified professional chef with licenses in Korean, Western, Chinese, Japanese, and pufferfish cuisine, the program is suitable for all participants - no matter of age, cooking skills, or familiarity with Korean food. The class accommodates a range of dietary requirements, including vegan, halal, and gluten-free options, providing an inclusive experience for all participants—whether traveling solo or with family, friends, or partners. Kids are welcome.
For those seeking a real-life cultural experience, Baeromodi also offers a “Market to Table” private class. Participants visit a local market to explore much more diverse selections of ingredients and select fresh ingredients by themselves before the class. This builds a deeper engagement into Korean cooking, fostering a closer connection with the region’s food culture.
Guided by its philosophy, “Beyond a Meal Experience,” Baeromodi offers an immersive cultural journey through cooking, learning, and sharing, delivering the stories of Korean food and culture in a meaningful and memorable way.
