For a true taste of Busan’s freshest catch, head to Shindonga Fish Market beside Jagalchi Market. Live seafood, the bustle of the market, and Busan’s distinctive food culture draw both residents and travelers here.
Where to Go for the Freshest Catch in Busan
Shindonga Fish Market sits right beside Jagalchi Market, making it quick and easy to access. A wide variety of live fish and seafood is available throughout the market. The ground floor is home to live fish vendors and restaurants. Visitors can see fresh fish swimming in the tanks before choosing a restaurant.
Every shop has fixed pricing. Clear price displays make ordering simple, with no need to bargain.
A Different Experience on Every Floor
Each floor of Shindonga Market brings a different attraction to your visit. The ground floor serves fresh raw fish and seafood. After choosing your fish downstairs, take it to a restaurant on the second floor for a full table setting. This is the best option for anyone who wants a filling meal with a steaming pot of spicy fish stew.
Afterward, stop by the dried seafood shops on the third floor. Anchovies, seaweed, dried laver, and other Busan staples make practical souvenirs or gifts.
An Authentic Taste of Busan at Hyeon Pung Restaurant
For our meal today, we chose Hyeon Pung Restaurant on the ground floor. The modumhoe (assorted raw fish) platter also included fresh seafood such as sea squirt and scallops, making the meal even more generous.
Seasonal sea bass, conger eel, and filefish each brought a different texture and flavor. When paired with Busan’s unique makjang dipping sauce, a richer, nuttier flavor was added.
Restaurants on the ground floor serve braised fish with seaweed soup instead of spicy fish stew, adding a distinct local touch. Anyone craving spicy fish stew can choose the fish on the ground floor, then bring it upstairs to a table setting restaurant on the second floor.
Make Shindonga Fish Market part of your Busan trip for a true taste of the city’s coastal food culture.
