The word “silence” may come into your mind first when you think of an art gallery. However, in this gallery, you can see children jumping over the colorful flowers on the floor of the exhibition hall. Head to Museum 1, a media art gallery, which is not for passive viewing but for active participation, that lets visitors become part of a piece of art.

“Art is not something that we simply watch. It is something for actual use and experience. This is the true value of art.”
Museum 1’s vice-curator Yoon Sang-hoon said that once you enter Museum 1, you can fully enjoy art for actual use and experience. As soon as you arrive at the entrance on the first floor, you will face a burst of diverse and fancy colors that are hardly used in daily life. Even though the corridor’s not that long, it may still take a while to pass it because the drawings in the frames featured change endlessly, keeping the space being transformed to a totally new space..

The spaces in Museum 1 are redesigned constantly. As media art has unfixed and changing characteristics, the museum presents a new and different space simultaneously with the same spatial structure. In the changing space, visitors find their new “me” and take pictures of them again and again. Thus, the “new ‘me’ in the changing space” becomes a part of the art.

After exploring the first floor, go up the second floor. From the terrace, the exhibition halls of the first floor resemble an amusement park. It all appears surreal with the lighting that appears flamboyant momentarily vanishes, the pictures on the screen, and the lively people following them. It is like being in someone’s dream. In the café on the second floor, you won’t even notice the time naturally passing by as you visit it.

In art galleries simply for viewing, works of art do not mean more than articles on exhibition. In Museum 1, artists are the creators of their art, but it is the visitors who will evaluate the results and recreate them. This means that all the visitors become artists as well. For preschoolers, guardians are required to hold their hand in the exhibition halls.
