Hilma af Klint: Proper Summons

Hilma af Klint was born in 1862 near Stockholm, Sweden. Remarkably for a woman of her time, she attended art school, where she carefully drew the plants she loved—flowers, trees, and other forms of nature. Before long, though, her curiosity reached beyond the visible world. Through bold shapes, vibrant colors, and unconventional compositions, she developed an artistic language entirely her own.

Hilma af Klint believed her work would be better understood by future generations than by the people of her own era. Because her paintings explored unseen realms that many found difficult to comprehend, she chose to keep them largely private. Even after her death, she requested her works remain hidden for a while—waiting for viewers with fresh eyes and open minds.

《Hilma af Klint: Proper Summons》 answers that long-held wish. This exhibition brings her once-forgotten paintings back into the light, offering a chance to slowly reflect on the ideas they hold. Looking back at the past always requires care—but in that careful gaze, questions for the present begin to surface. What once felt strange or incomprehensible now speaks to us in new and unexpected ways.

The exhibition features more than 140 works by Hilma af Klint. Her early drawings of flowers and trees gradually evolve into mysterious compositions filled with symbols and signs. Her daring attempts to depict the invisible world—through vivid colors and striking forms—eventually shift toward simpler, quieter expressions that still leave a deep impression. Alongside the paintings, her writings offer an intimate glimpse into the thoughts and creative process behind her art.

Perhaps the time Hilma af Klint was waiting for is now. Long ago, she believed that someone in the future would one day understand her work—and that quiet conviction endured. Today, as we stand before her paintings, we come face to face with questions from the past. Art that has crossed a century still speaks, and its long silence finally unfolds into a story we can share.
